A Beginners Guide To Owning Crystals

Crystals: Their history, what they do, and what to be wary of.

Crystals are nothing new, in fact most crystals have been around longer than the human race. But the popularity of owning crystals is definitely rising. Something that was once deemed as “witchcraft” has now been turned into a somewhat fashion/interior design statement. So I thought I’d make this blog post to give a 101 on what owning crystals entails and if you’re new to this world, some stones to consider and ones to avoid.

The History Of Owning Crystals

Before owning crystals became a trend, ancient civilisations like the Greeks, Egyptians and the Chinese believed that these stones held power. They could heal, enhance, and protect on a physical and energetic level. Crystals are part of a deep mystical legacy that still reigns true today, before you jump on trend to buy the latest crystal - you should know that people before us turned to these stones for support, healing, and connection from the Earth.

As time changed and we became a science-led society, in the late 19th-20th century crystals became villanised. They started to become viewed as a “hippie” nonsense thing to believe in as the rise of rationalism and scientific materialism became the norm in the West.

Fast forward to now, where the New Age movement has brought back the worship of crystals. In the 1960’s-1970’s when people started believing in astrology and spirituality again. It is important to know that only in the last couple of decades have crystals been accepted in society again.

Do Crystals Really Hold Any Power?

This is not a straightforward question, scientifically speaking - there is little evidence that crystals emit healing energy. BUT their dominance in other cultures for their spiritual and energetic healing has withstood for centuries, which has to count for something…

Maybe they’re not magic, but they can be powerful symbols when used with intention.

Crystals For Beginners To Start With:

It is important to note that each crystal is said to have a different power, so these suggestions are ambiguous to all. If there is something specific you want or need from a crystal, then you should do further research. With that said, here’s 5 beginner friendly crystals:

  1. Rose Quartz (probably the most well known crystal today, associated with feelings of love and compassion)

  2. Amethyst (Known for it’s calming energy)

  3. Citrine (Bright and energising)

  4. Black Tourmaline (Grounding and protecting)

  5. Clear Quartz (“master healer” known to amplify your intentions and ambitions)

Crystals To Avoid:

If you are just looking to dip your toe into the world of crystals, here’s 5 stones you should probably avoid as they are known for being very powerful:

  1. Moldavite (Super high-vibrational and very transformative)

  2. Malachite (Brings up buried feelings, intense emotional cleanser)

  3. Obsidian (Reveals deep truths and shadows of the past)

  4. Labradorite (Can bring up feelings of confusion)

  5. Hematite (Almost too grounding, can make you feel heavy)

Final Verdict

Crystals can be your best friend if you’re trying to energetically and emotionally heal, but with any spiritual practice, always do your research before trying. Spiritual work is intense and shouldn’t be glossed over as an “aesthetic”.
